KARACHI, Oct 18: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday exhorted city government officials to immediately bring an end to the general impression that no work was being done at the Civic Centre without greasing the palms of officials.

In his introductory meeting with heads of various departments, he urged them to work as a team and strive hard to help solve problems of people so that they could feel a pleasant change in their quality of life.

Emphasizing the need for improving the systems of water supply, sewerage and transport, he said: “Isn’t it amazing that on one hand, we cannot provide clean water to our citizens and, on the other, we expect them to follow rules and regulations in a manner practised in New York.”

Deploring that poor quality of education was being imparted in government schools, the nazim asked education department officials to take steps for improving education quality.

Stressing the need for improving the city government’s revenue position, he hoped that officials belonging to the revenue department would strive hard for that, so that more development projects could be undertaken.

Earlier, he asked the DCO, Fazalur Rehman, to expedite the process of sending Rs20 million to victims of the earthquake from his discretionary funds.

TRANSPORT: Presiding over a meeting of the city government’s transport department, Mr Kamal urged officials to chalk out a comprehensive plan aimed at improving the city’s transport system on modern lines.

He asked officials to improve the traffic signal system to help provide relief to motorists.
