LAHORE, Oct 16: Three-year-old chestnut colt, Newton, ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman predictably outclassed his 13 rivals to edge out Manu Janu to win the Islamabad Cup run over 1200m during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The winner dictated a good gallop in the early part of the race but was caught up at the dying minutes of the race but for strong pushing by jockey Shahid Rehman which saw the colt win by a neck’s margin from late rushing Manu Janu.

Rough Tough finished third a length further behind while Green Street completed the frame among 14 runners. This was very keenly contested race among top jockeys at Lahore.

The first meeting during the holy month of Ramazan proved very profitable for jockey M. Hanif and veteran trainer Haji Ghulam Sarwar, who stole the limelights.

Hanif rode home four winners which included a hat trick while Sarwar sent out three winners. Both ending the day in a blaze of glory.

Jockey Hanif’s winners were First Passion, Legend, Brave Majesty and Achilles.

His three winners except Brave Majesty were trained by Haji Ghulam Sarwar, a champion trainer of yesteryear.
