PESHAWAR, Oct 14: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has condemned the killing of civilians in clashes with Rangers personnel in Gilgit. It says the killings seem to follow a distinct pattern of brutality and violence against citizens.

Repeated clashes between peaceful demonstrators and police have been reported in recent months, in many cases leading to injuries inflicted on civilians and adding to the acute sense of harassment faced by many sections of society.

The incident, in which, according to reports, young people protesting the death in Rangers’ detention of a student clashed with paramilitary personnel has only added to the prevailing sectarian tensions in the area.
