KARACHI, Oct 13: A number of students under an alliance at the University of Karachi continued raising concern over the new admission policy by holding rally and demonstration on Thursday.

The group of students feared that the changes in the admission policy adopted by the academic council of the varsity were aimed at “depriving the outstation students of admissions” to various departments in the new session.

In view of the situation taking place in the wake of boycott of classes and frequent events of agitation in certain departments, the varsity management had order for strict security measures and rangers were deployed additionally in the Arts lobby and other sensitive points of the KU.

Outsiders were also checked at the entrances of the university in order to avoid outside support to the protesting students.

Students from outside Karachi study at various departments of the arts faculty where Karachi-based students showed little interest, said a student on the campus.

Now university has decided not to allow admission to students who have not cleared their matriculation, intermediate and bachelor examinations from Karachi-based institutions, it was said.

The agitating students during their course of protest also tried to disturb teaching process, but were timely intercepted and told in clear term that counter measures could be taken if they tried to cause any law and order situation, said a KU official.

According to a source on the campus, the teaching process was partially suspended; however no incidence of violence took place.

The protesting students urged the controlling authority of the varsity to intervene and ensure justice in the case of students coming from other parts of the country .

According to another source on the campus, the KU VC had already formed a committee to negotiate with the protesting students, but apparently there was no development in that direction on Thursday. The committee is supposed to deliver a report for the VC in a day or two, it was further learnt.
