BAHAWALPUR, Oct 4: Accountability Court Judge Syed Mumtaz Husain Shah has awarded six years rigorous imprisonment and Rs500,000 fine to a food inspector for embezzlement.

In case of default of payment of fine, he will have to undergo additional one year rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, food inspector Ijaz Rasool embezzled Rs1400,000 worth gunny bags during his posting in Kot Addu in 1998-99.

ELECTROCUTED: A teenaged boy was electrocuted in Samarsatta on Wednesday.

Rizwan was carrying an iron bar and accidentally touched live electric wires. He died on the spot.

SIX ARRESTED: Six people were arrested from Basti Karna on the charge of using alcohol on Wednesday night.

Civil Lines police claimed that they raided the house of councillor Abdul Rasool and found six men, including Union Council No 86-DB Naib Nazim Amir Bakht Doha, using alcohol.

Meanwhile, Khairpur police claimed that they arrested an accomplice of notorious dacoit Riaz Rath from the cotton fields.

His two accomplices, who had deprived a man of his motorcycle, escaped.

TRANSFERRED: The Punjab government has replaced Dr Matin Behzad, the project director of the Bahawalpur Rural Development Project, with Khizar Hayat Gondal.

Dr Behzad is a reputed economist and an additional secretary of the agriculture department.

The six-year Bahawalpur Rural Development Project has been financed by the Asian Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank. A number of welfare schemes have been completed in rural areas under the project with the community participation.
