GUJRANWALA, Jan 21: Traders on Monday voiced their disquiet over 50 per cent increase in goods transportation fares by truckers.

Protesting traders said they had to suffer huge losses as their consignments could not be dispatched to various cities and towns.

Meanwhile, truckers and goods transporters said the situation occurred due to the shortage of trucks, adding the raise in fairs would be withdrawn after the availability of required number of trucks.

TRADER KILLED: A trader was killed while 10 other passengers sustained injuries on Monday in an accident on the GT Road near Kamoke.

A Lahore bound wagon was on its way when it crashed into a speeding truck coming from the opposite side. Sheikh Imran Elahi of Nomania Road died on the spot while 10 passengers received wounds. They were rushed to the local DHQ hospital in critical condition.

DHQ HOSPITAL: The local DHQ Hospital will be equipped with modern machinery, including an operation theatre for open heart surgery.

This was stated by district Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha while talking to the DHQ administration during his visit to the hospital here on Monday.

He took a round of outdoor and indoor wards besides visiting operation theatres to get the first hand knowledge. He stressed the officials to provide all medical facilities to patients.

MS Dr Muhammad Hussain told the district Nazim that X-ray and ultra sound machines were urgently required.

ARRESTED: The district police claim to have arrested 26 proclaimed offenders and several gangs of dacoits and robbers during a general hold-up here on Monday.

SSP Muhammad Aslam Tarin said the police had also recovered four pistols, six revolvers, four carbines, seven guns, three rifles of 7mm and looted goods from their possession.

He said 17 motorcycles were also taken into custody on suspicion of theft.

Meanwhile, the traffic police issued over 3,000 tickets to vehicle owners and fined Rs 461,000 collectively on the charge of violating traffic rules during a week.

ANTI-POLIO DRIVE: The three-day anti-polio campaign organized by the health department was inaugurated by district Nazim Fayyaz Ahmad Chattha in the DHQ Hospital here on Monday.

The Nazim provided drops to children of five years. He was told that around 355,000 children would be provided drops by 681 mobile teams. Around 92 centres have been established in and around the city for the purpose.

URGED: Mangla Corps Commander Lt-Gen Ghulam Mustafa on Monday visited border area and reviewed troops’ preparedness, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release stated.

He urged the soldiers not to lower guards and prepare for giving a befitting response to the enemy.
