WASHINGTON: The US Senate has fixed Feb. 9 to start the impeachment trial of the former president Donald Trump for allegedly stirring an insurrection.

Nine members of the US House of Representatives walked to the Senate on Monday evening and delivered a document demanding the trial. The Senate accepted the document, known as the article of impeachment, and set Feb 9 for beginning the trial.

The single article charges Trump with “willfully inciting violence against the government of the United States.” The move makes Trump the second president in US history to face an impeachment trial and the only to face it twice.

Later, US President Joe Biden told CNN that he knew that the trial could have repercussions but “I think it has to happen. There would be a worse effect if it did not happen.”
