ISLAMABAD, Oct 8: Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro prorogued the session to express sympathy with the victims of the earthquake that hit a number of cities on Saturday morning.

Leader of the House Wasim Sajjad said the government would adopt all possible measures and utilize its resources to effectively meet this emergency situation.

He said there was no complete information about loss of life and property, however, rescue teams were trying to save as many people as possible. He said this was a natural calamity and urged the nation to unite in the face of this disaster.

Earlier, soon after the recitation of the Holy Quran, Opposition Leader in the Senate Raza Rabbani drew attention of the House to the earthquake.

On point of order, he said the government should utilize all its resources for the rescue operation, adding that there was a need for massive national mobilization to effectively deal with such an emergency situation.

Raza Rabbani said the earthquake, one of the deadliest in the history of the country, jolted the federal capital, the Northern Areas, Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad, Bagh and other cities of the country.

Senators Asfandyar Wali, Tahira Latif, Mohim Khan Baloch, Azam Swati and Hidayatullah proposed prorogation of the House enabling the members to take part in rescue operations in their respective areas.

Later, the Senate chairman read out the prorogation order after concluding business of the house.—APP
