KARACHI, Oct 6: PPP-backed Awam Dost candidate faced a defeat for the post of nazim in Keamari Town with a small margin of only two votes in a hotly contested election on Thursday.

A neck-to-neck fight was held between former town nazim Zulfikar Yunus and ex-MPA and former chairman of Fishermen Cooperative Society Humayun Khan.

Zulfiqar Yunus, who was nominated by the PPP, has the support of fishermen communities in Shamspir, Baba-Bhit islands and Hawksbay.

Mr Humayun was nominated by the Pakistan Muslim League (Q). He was earlier elected MPA on PML-Nawaz ticket in the second term of the party.

He was equally popular among fishermen communities of Keamari and was elected as chairman of Fishermen Cooperative Society.

According to unofficial results, Mr Hamayun got 52 votes while his opponent received 50 votes.

LYARI: In Lyari town also, the PPP received a setback where party’s officially nominated Awam Dost candidate Mohammad Khan was defeated by Malik Fayyaz, a candidate fielded by the Workers Alliance Group, a rival group of the PPP.
