Ali clinches Quaid golf

LAHORE, Jan 20: Ali Ahmed of Lahore Gymkhana won the Quaid-i-Azam amateur golf championship with a net score of 11 under-205 at the Lahore Gymkhana course Sunday.

Tariq Mehmood of Islamabad clinched the gross event with a score of seven over-223.

Ali, a 16-handicapper who entered five under-67 on each of the first two day, however, carded a one over-73 on the final day.

The 17-handicapper, Mian Tariq Pervez (Lahore Gymkhana) showed improved performance on final day to finish one stroke behind Ali Ahmed. Pervez had begun the day behind Ali Ahmed, Asad Khawar and Danayal Aziz. He ) on Saturday with net aggregate  of  140 (71+69). He played a final round of six under-66.

With 209 (68+71+70), Danayl Aziz finished third.

In the gross section, Tariq Mehmood played badly on the last day as he entered a card of four over-76. Reigning national champion Shahid Javed Khan threated Tariq but his efforts were not enough. He finished second with an aggregate of 224 (80+71+73).

Sameer Iftikhar (Gymkhana) with aggregate of 228 (81+75+72) finished third.

Mrs Naureen Ejaz won the ladies net trophy. Mrs Aysha Amin (155) was the runner-up.

Mrs Jamila Jabbar (169) won the ladies gross event while Ms Shahzadi Gulfam (183) got the second position.
