Celebratory gunfire

Published December 31, 2020

This is with reference to the news report ‘Celebratory gunfire on New Year’s Eve to attract attempted murder charges’ (Dec 25). This is a step in the right direction. As the eve approaches, one cannot help but think of the many souls that have been lost to the cruel celebratory firing in the air around midnight Dec 31. While other countries celebrate entering into the new year with spectacular fireworks, we, in Pakistan, have become accustomed to aerial firing.

What people do not realise is that these bullets do not vanish into thin air, but come back with more velocity to kill and injure many people every year.

I urge the lawmakers to ensure that the law is implemented in letter and in spirit, and book anyone and everyone found involved in this hideous practice.
