LAHORE, Oct 2: Punjab and NWFP won their matches on the opening day of the fourth National women’s softball championship at the Lahore College, University for Women ground on Sunday.

In the first match, Punjab beat Sindh 7-3.

Punjab gained 3-1 lead at the end of the first innings. Shabana (2) and Arbila (1) scored for the winners.

Khalida scored a run for the losers.

In the second innings, both the teams failed to add any run as both displayed good fielding while their pitchers also pitched well.

In the third innings, Ulfat and Shabana struggled to collect one more run despite fiery pitching from Sindh bowlers to increase the lead to 4-1.

In the fourth and fifth innings, Punjab added three more runs through Mussarat, Nazish and Ulfat while Sindh scored two runs through Maria to complete the tally.

NWFP carved out a 7-5 victory against Islamabad.

Islamabad made a good start scoring a run in the first innings through Samina.

NWFP caught up with Islamabad at 3-3 in the third innings.

In the fourth innings, NWFP dominated by scoring three more runs to increase the lead.

For the winners, Najma, Sonia and Naila scored two runs each and Samina one.
