LAHORE: The newly upgraded orthopaedic unit and trauma centre has started functioning at the Jinnah Hospital with six additional features, including knee joint replacement and support surgeries.

This facility was established under a public-private partnership and housed four high-tech modular operation theatres. One of the six surgical facilities available here is arthroplasty (knee joint replacement).

Under this procedure, the examination and treatment of damage of the interior part of a joint is performed using an arthroscope, a type of a camera inserted into the joint through a small incision.

The other facilities included spine surgery, paediatric, orthopedic, bone deformity and pain management.

Knee joint replacement, spine surgery and the surgeries as a result of sports injuries are costly procedures at private health facilities. However, they were being provided for free at Jinnah Hospital, as under an agreement, all the expenses on these surgical procedures would be borne by donors/philanthropists.

Headed by Prof Dr Tahseen Riaz, a team of senior surgeons performed procedures at the Orthopaedic Unit-I.

Talking to Dawn, Prof Riaz said Jinnah Hospital Board of Management Chairman Gohar Ejaz, during his recent visit, had announced to provide funds from donations to buy joints and implants.

He said the project housed state-of-the-art modular operation theatres to perform highly complex and sophisticated surgeries, outpatient clinics and trauma centre providing 24/7 services.

“The outpatient facility started working six days a week with special clinics; a model introduced for the first time in any public sector hospital,” he added.
