CALCUTTA: Eleven persons are dead and about 125 have been detained for treatment in hospitals as a result of Thursday’s firing on students in Calcutta, according to statistics available by midnight tonight [Nov 22]. These figures do not include the number of policemen injured which is about 40. Firing was opened by the police at five places.

A Deputy Police Commissioner at the headquarters was seriously injured by missiles thrown by the crowd which also suffered casualties when hit by bullets and ‘lathi’ charges. Twelve military lorries have been set on fire in the Bhowanipore area, where a state of panic prevails.... Four lorries were set on fire at the crossing of Hazara Road and Russa Road and two others near Jagu Babu Bazar. ... One American soldier is reported to have been injured.

An A.P.A. message says: Firing and street demonstrations broke out here again today, paralysing Calcutta’s transport system as University students sought for a second day to celebrate Indian National Army Day. …It was yesterday’s unsuccessful attempt to reach this Square for a mass meeting which ended in tragedy.
