KARACHI, Sept 26: The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) plans to produce more than 200 PhDs during the next few years. This was stated by FUUAST Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Iqbal Mohsin, during a joint meeting of the teachers of the institutions, says a statement on Monday.

Dr Mohsin was of the view that in the next five years the FUUAST would emerge as an important seat of higher learning in the country. He pointed out that enrolment at the FUUAST at present was more than 8,000 which was expected to increase up to 14,000 in the next five years.

The vice-chancellor said that the institution had plans for introducing new departments of Social Policy, Business Research, Energy research, Statistics, Civic Development, and Centre for English Language, Central Research Laboratory and Environment Research Centre.

He pointed out that at present the number of teachers at the three campuses of the Urdu varsity was 300 and of these 40 were PhDs. Regarding the production of science text books in Urdu, he said that every year 50 text books would be made available for the students.

The vice-chancellor was of the view that the basic purpose of the FUUAST was to produce good professionals as well as responsible members of the society.—APP
