KARACHI: PPP decision stirs rift

Published September 27, 2005

KARACHI, Sept 26: Councillors of the PPP-backed Awam Dost group in Lyari Town are divided over the nomination of Malik Mohammad, former naib nazim, as the candidate for the slot of town nazim.

The PPP leadership favoured him from among four candidates, the other three being senior party activist Mr Rashid, Haji Fayyaz and Nasir Karim.

The decision has caused unrest among many senior activists who have now been urging PPP high-command to review the same. They have conveyed to the leadership that a large number of councillors had serious reservations over Mr Malik’s nomination.

Mr Malik got the favour as he enjoyed support of the local MNA and a couple of MPAs, some activists pointed out.

A senior activist, speaking on behalf of those opposing Mr Malik’s nomination, said a meeting of the Awam Dost councillors would be held on Wednesday night to evolve a consensus on the issue if the party leadership did not come out with and amicable settlement of the dispute.
