KARACHI: British Deputy High Commissioner Mike Nithavrianakis met city Administrator Iftikhar Ali Shallwani here at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation office on Wednesday.

Mr Nithavrianakis tendered his country’s support for projects of solid waste management, transport and provisions of drinking water in Karachi.

Pakistan would be assisted financially through export-oriented fund, he added.

While appreciating the city’s municipal administration for establishing street libraries and updating libraries, Mr Nithavrianakis said that the British government would also provide technical assistance and books for libraries in Karachi.

The administrator thanked the deputy high commissioner for offering support and said that Pakistan and the UK have good relations from the very first day. “A large number of Pakistanis are studying in the British educational institutes,” he added.

Mr Shallwani said that the UK was cooperating with Pakistan in different sectors, adding that Pakistan wanted to take full advantage of the British experience in different fields.

He said that Karachi was the biggest city and economic hub of Pakistan as the people across the country moved here for employment. “Karachi has unique importance right after formation of Pakistan as there are industrial zones. The city is being developed day by day,” said Mr Shallwani.

The administrator added that the KMC was taking all-out measures to provide better civic facilities to the people.

He said that infrastructure was being uplifted, while many works were under way in education and health sectors.

“Different sectors in Karachi can be put on path of development with support of the UK,” he added.
