KARACHI: A local court on Monday remanded a suspect in judicial custody for allegedly being involved in defrauding women through fake marriages in Karachi.

Police claimed to have arrested Mohammad Nasir for allegedly defrauding a woman through fake marriage in the Orangi Town locality.

On Monday, the investigating officer (IO) produced the suspect before a judicial magistrate (West) to seek his physical remand for interrogation and investigation.

The IO said the suspect allegedly married complainant Sarwat Begum Siddiqui on May 20, 2014, but rukhsati did not take place. The nikah was held at Ali Imambargah in Qasba Colony in the presence of the witnesses, including Sheikh Jamal Yousuf, Mohammad Shayan and Amir Khan, the alleged accomplices of suspect Nasir.

He also mentioned that the suspect fraudulently obtained Rs800,000 from the complainant on the pretext of doing business during a period of one year till Feb 10, 2015, but escaped.

Later the complainant came to know that the suspect managed to get a fake marriage certificate and defrauded her.

The IO informed the court that the suspect was associated with a gang of people involved in defrauding women by contracting fake marriages with them and destroying their lives.

He informed the court that the detained suspect was required to be interrogated to complete the investigation and other legal formalities. He requested for a 14-day physical remand of the suspect in police custody.
