Former KE chairman Tabish Gauhar appointed as SAPM on power

Former Karachi Electric chairman Tabish Gauhar has been appointed as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Power, it emerged on Friday.

A notification issued by the Cabinet Division, dated October 1, said the premier "has been pleased to appoint Mr Tabish Gauhar as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Power with immediate effect".

Gauhar is the founder and chairman of Oasis Energy — a management consultancy firm in the power and energy sector. He has a first-class honours degree from King's College, London and also has an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration in Pakistan.

He stepped down as director, chief executive officer and chairman of KE's board in 2015, after working at the organisation for over seven years, according to a statement on the power utility's website.

"Under his leadership, the company made significant progress in key operational and financial indicators and generated a profit for the first time in 17 years in 2012," the statement added.

So, K-Electric's sales to Shanghai Electric is to be completed in record time now with the burden of enhanced rates for electricity consumption by the citizens of Karachi being passed on to them. There is no end to their suffering as everyone is in cohoots to fleece them by any means possible.

So his achievement is that K E paid dividend. A private monopoly getting generous tariff hikes from NEPRA, dividends was not an achievement. How much was generation and distribution capacity enhancement? Did line losses go down? Why copper cables were removed ? Was there any illegal over charging? He should answer these questions rather than chest beating on dividend

Tabish Gauhar was previously head of KE and he knows very well as what are the loop-holes of KE. After becoming SAPM now he is standing on the other side of the fence. Tabish Gauhar can suggest to the present CEO of KE Moonis Alvi as how to run day to day KE's affairs without load-shedding in any area of Karachi. He can also work out on a plan how to keep the electricity tariff as low as possible to provide relief to Karachiites who are the worst suffers since KESC has been privatized.

@hamid shafiq, Good question as to what he can do. I think he can do a lot. For instance, collecting his paychecks every month, also to to see what other benefits he can avail. But it may be too early to say as to what he will produce as per his job responsibilities. Lets wait for his first performance review by his 'honest boss'.
