ISLAMABAD: The Sup­reme Court on Wednesday granted bail on medical grounds to 77-year-old Omni Group chairman Khawaja Anver Majeed in the Rs35 billion fake bank accounts case.

A two-judge SC bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam, which had taken up Anver Majeed’s bail plea, ordered the petitioner to furnish surety bonds of Rs1 million and surrender his passport to the registrar of the Supreme Court. The authorities concerned were directed to place the name of the petitioner on the Exit Control List. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was asked to continue its inquiry against the accused.

Anver Majeed and Abdul Ghani Majid of the Omni Group are facing the fake accounts case along with Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur.

On Jan 7 last year, the Supreme Court had ordered referring the report of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in the fake account case to NAB for further inquiry as well as putting the names of different accused on the ECL.

On Wednesday, prosecutor Imranul Haq informed the apex court that Anver Majeed had been admitted to the hospital since day one and he had not appeared before NAB till date and because of his non-cooperation 15 investigations and four references were pending.
