KARACHI: A high-powered commission would soon be appointed by the Central Government to study and recommend methods for water distribution between Sind and Punjab, the Governor of Sind Lt- Gen Rakhman Gul said in Karachi last night [July 31]. He was talking to newsmen on return to Karachi from Lahore. …

The Governor was informed that certain political quarters had recently complained that in some areas, non-local population in Sind was being subjected to discrimination in respect of services etc. The Governor denied it and said that the question of local and non-local did not arise because everybody settled down in Sind was entitled to enjoy equal rights and privileges in all respects. He said that he did not receive complaints but assured that his Government would certainly look into [it] if such complaints were received.

The Governor also said if he received complaints from the public regarding malpractices in the Police Department, he would definitely look into them....

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Dacca,] Shaikh Mujibur Rahman, Chief of the Awami League, is leaving here tomorrow [Aug 1] for Serajganj and other places with relief materials for the flood-affected people.
