ADAM Smith reiterated in 1776 the importance of communication networks as the backbone of economies. He said that effective networks guarantee the fruits of global markets. In fact, they act as arteries of a region and civilizations.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor based on the historic silk route, is a dream come true. Both China and Pakistan have done a laudable job in the successful execution of phase-1 of this ambitious project. The CPEC is not merely a road project, it encompasses several elements, whose integration plays a vital role in achieving its objectives.

However, the delay in constructing economic zones presents a grim picture and a reminder on the side of Pakistan. The true objectives of this ambitious corridor can only materialise by strengthening and energising our exports. Economic zones are indispensable for achieving this objective.

The substantial delay in the Quaid-i-Azam Apparel park, situated on M-2 near Sheikhupura, and Rashakai Economic Zone, situated on M-1 near Mardan, are grim reminders of lack of planning and vision required for successful implementation. These projects are in the doldrums.

The authorities must ensure its timely completion by encouraging the private sector. Otherwise the true potential of CPEC, as envisaged by its planners, will never be achieved.
