FAISALABAD, Sept 12: The one-man tribunal, headed by district and sessions judge Abdul Waheed, completed its ex parte inquiry proceedings into the Sonia Naz case and the motor registration scandal here on Monday.

The tribunal recorded statements of some 22 people, including police and excise officials, during its week-long proceedings. Main accused former SP investigation Abdullah Khalid and suspended inspector Jamshed Chishti remained present before the tribunal till the completion of the proceedings.

Faisalabad DIG Sajjad Ahmad also appeared before the tribunal last Saturday to counter the allegations levelled against him by SP Abdullah.

On Monday, a local jeweller, Shafaat Rana, reportedly a close friend of police officers, appeared before the tribunal and presented the copy of a bank receipt claiming that he had given Rs30,000 on the request of Asim Yousaf for the release of Sonia from jail when she was arrested after trespassing the National Assembly hall.

A lady councillor, Sameea, of Madina Town in her statement claimed that Yousaf and Sonia were her tenants and living like a couple without ‘nikkah’.

Umer Butt, a resident of Faisalabad, said he had purchased a car from Yousaf which was registered on bogus documents, therefore, a case was got registered against Yousaf.

SI Ghulam Mustafa said he had visited the house of Yousaf in Diglospura a number of times to serve him summons, but all efforts proved futile due to his non-availability.

After recording these four statements, the tribunal concluded its proceedings and reserved fact findings. It is likely to submit its report to the government through the Lahore High Court.

However, Sonia and her lawyers continued boycott of the week-long proceedings by expressing a no-confidence over the presiding officer, and not a single witness appeared or evidence produced before the tribunal in support of Sonia’s allegations.

Almost all statements were recorded in support of or on behalf of SP Abdullah and inspector Jamshed Chishti. Some of the witnesses like jeweller Shafaat Rana and councillor Sameea Begum appeared before the tribunal reportedly to please the accused police officials.
