Dispute in ANP over nazim’s nomination

Published September 13, 2005

TIMERGARA, Sept 12: The nomination for tehsil nazim Timergara has divided workers and leaders of the Awami National Party. Differences appeared at an ANP meeting held here on Monday to discuss the third phase of the local government elections and finalize candidates for different slots.

The party nominated Haji Bahadar Khan for the slot of tehsil nazim Samar Bagh, but when it presented the name of Haji Shamsul Qamar for the slot of teshil nazim Timergara, some party workers objected to it. They said that both Mr Bahadar and Mr Qamar belonged to Samar Bagh and alleged that the district president sided with Mr Qamar.

They demanded nomination of a local worker for tehsil nazim Timeragara. However, the district president refused to withdraw the decision. On the refusal, the workers boycotted the meeting and staged a walk out.

Some workers told Dawn that if the decision was not withdrawn, they would support their independent candidate for the slot.

When contacted, the former district ANP president of Dir Lower, Ayub Khan, said it was a critical situation for the party. If the problem was not settled, the Jamaat-i-Islami would take advantage of the situation, he added.—Correspondent
