KHAR: Gunmen killed a health worker of Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) in Sharif Khana area of Bajaur tribal district here late on Wednesday.

Nawagai subdivision assistant commissioner Habibullah Khan Wazir told Dawn that EPI technician Abdul Wahab was sitting in a shop along with villagers when the assailants, who had covered faces, opened fire on him with automatic rifles.

He said that the victim, who was seriously wounded in the attack, was taken to the district headquarters hospital, Khar.

Doctors said Mr Wahab succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Residents said Mr Wahab, 40, had no personal dispute with anyone in the region and was known in the area for his health services and friendly behaviour with villagers.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack nor have the family and officials blamed anyone for the murder.

A senior police official told this correspondent that a case had been registered, while search for the assailants had been launched.

He said it seemed to be a case of targeted killing.

Meanwhile, a man was killed and his brother received injuries when a bomb exploded in their field in Hilalkhel area of Nawagai subdivision here on Thursday.

The police said Zakirullah Khan and his brother Saidullah Khan were working in their field in locality when the explosive device went off.

They said Zakirulah succumbed to injuries in the hospital, while condition of his brother Saidulllah was out of danger.
