GUJRANWALA, Sept 7: The Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) constituted various committees for the Friday’s successful shutter down and wheel-jam strike on the call given by its leadership. While the district administration and police have also finalized their strategy to foil the strike and deployed Elite Force personnel in and around the city to maintain the law and order situation.

The ARD and leaders of the two major political parties — PML-N and the PPP held a meeting at the residence of former federal minister Ghulam Dastagir Khan on Wednesday and chalked out their strategy.

Mr Dastagir said that Gujranwala had always remained ahead in launching movements for the restoration of democracy and human rights in the past and would play its part in the future as well.

He claimed that the business community had assured its support to the strike call given against government policies while transporters and public vehicle owners would also cooperate.

Meanwhile, DCO Khalid Masood Chaudhry and DPO Dr Arif Mushtaq warned that miscreants would be taken to task if they tried to destroy the public peace or properties.

They said the business community and transporters would be provided protection during the so-called strike call given by the ARD.

Death sentence: A local court awarded death sentence with fine worth Rs300,000 collectively to three dacoits for killing an Elite Force official on offering resistance here on Wednesday.

According to the prosecution, Sohaib, Arshad and Muhammad Ashraf were looting the passers-by near Talwandi Musa Khan village. They intercepted Elite Force official Liaquat Ali, took away cash, his official documents, a pistol and shot him dead on offering resistance on Nov 8, 2004.
