PESHAWAR: A multi-slice whole-body CT scan machine has been installed at the accident and emergency department of the Khyber Teaching Hospital to facilitate prompt investigations of the critically-ill and wounded patients.

A press release issued here on Tuesday said that the machine had been purchased at Rs109 million. Earlier, the KTH had one-slice CT scanner installed in 2006 through an endowment fund.

KTH’s medical director Prof Irshad Ahmed, while inaugurating the state-of-the-art machine, said it offered quick and accurate diagnosis with the fastest 3D reconstruction speed of 60 images per second and with the smallest slice thickness of 0.5mm.

He said the CT scan machine provided sophisticated application of single-energy metal artifact reduction (SEMAR), which eliminates artifacts caused by metal, while improving visualisation of metallic implants, supporting bone and adjacent soft tissues for an accurate diagnosis. It is equipped with sophisticated technology for cardiac CT application and cardiac CT angiography.

He said the hospital’s board of governors had been making untiring efforts to make the institution one of the best and equip it with latest technology for quality patient care.

He said the new installation had strengthened the radiology department of the hospital, and would play an important role in training of the postgraduate students.

Prof Ahmed said the health department was planning to purchase more equipment for the KTH’s emergency department to improve its service delivery.
