ISLAMABAD, Aug 20: The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Asia region on Saturday unanimously elected Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro as the association chairperson for the region for a three-year term.

In a statement issued here, the presiding officers and representatives of the national and provincial legislatures of the Asia region agreed that the office of the chair would rotate every year for the said term among Bangladesh, the Maldives and Sri Lanka in alphabetical order.

The delegates considered clause by clause the draft constitution of the CPA and unanimously gave approval to the Asia region constitution after incorporating some amendments which had become essential after the departure of India from the association.

W.J.M. Lokobandra, speaker of Sri Lankan parliament; Akhtar Hamid, deputy speaker of Bangladesh parliament; Sardar Mohammad Yaqoob, deputy speaker of National Assembly; Balochistan Assembly speaker, deputy speaker of NWFP Assembly, secretaries of Punjab and Sindh assemblies were also present on the occasion.
