LAHORE, Aug 16: The PPP, alleging that the ruling party was trying to manipulate the local elections, said on Tuesday the opposition would resist “goondaism” with public support.

At a news conference held at the office of Naveed Chaudhry, deputy-information secretary Altaf Qureshi said the PPP had sent a letter to the chief election commissioner informing him about the tactics being used by the ruling party to win the elections. But, he said, the CEC had not taken any action to stop what had been pointed out to him.

Raja Zulqernain and Azma Bukhari were also present at the news conference.

The PPP leaders alleged that former nazims of Lahore and Faisalabad were using the electronic media for their campaigns, spending much more than what the law allowed for electioneering.

They also alleged that the official residence of the former Lahore nazim was being used for political purposes, which was illegal.

They demanded that Gujrat’s Nutt House and the former Lahore nazim’s residences should be raided to see the ‘illegal activities’ being carried out there against the political opponents of the government.

The PPP leaders also pointed out that several huge billboards had been put up by the ruling party in the city in violation of the code of conduct.

They demanded that Nankana Sahib be also declared a sensitive district.

Answering a question, they said the party was watchful of the situation and would devise its strategy after the polls.
