KARACHI, Aug 15: The former city nazim of Karachi, Niamatullah Khan, on Monday, took media men on a tour to various development projects, carried out by his administration and rallied with the workers of the Muttahida Majlis Amal and the Pakistan Peoples Party, two days ahead of the LB polls.

Around two dozen newsmen were taken to more than 10 development projects in the city. The city government, in its four years tenure, rebuilt several roundabouts in the city to maintain traffic flow and the objective was achieved as pressure of traffic at Numaish Chowrangi, Guru Mandir Chowrangi, Board Office Chowrangi and Nagan Chowrangi had considerably lessened, Mr Niamat told reporters.

Refuting claims of his opponents, Mr Niamat said many of the important projects including the FTC flyover were funded by the city government.

However, he said, the federal government had funded the Northern Bypass, Lyari Expressway and K-3 projects, for which the city government never credited itself, the former nazim added.

Speaking to reporters at the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases, the former city nazim accused some of the Sindh government officials for creating obstacles to the CDGK-initiated projects.

Touring the Safari Park with newsmen, Mr Niamat said that shortly after his government was dissolved for the election, the Sindh government reshuffled the park administration, resulting in poor performance in its maintenance. The chair-lift project for the Safari Park was delayed without any concrete reason, Niamat charged.

The tour turned into a small-scale political rally when Niamat arrived at Dalmia Road in Gulshan Iqbal Town. Workers of the MMA and PPP chanted slogans, announcing support for him.—PPI
