KARACHI, Aug 15: The staff in several city colleges who have yet been assigned election duties would be briefed about their election duties on Aug 16 at the National College.

A source in the higher education department said that in view of confusion among teaching and non-teaching staff of grade 5 to 18 about local body poll duties, the authorities have decided to hold a meeting of the teachers still awaiting election duties as teachers are perturbed over issuance of arrest warrants and notices by the election authorities.

In May last, a list of about 3,000 college teachers and other staff, including those from technical college sides, was forwarded to the EC on its demand, but a number of staff, particularly those belonging to higher grades, were, in fact, not issued any letters for election duties, said the source.

A senior official said in some cases election letters issued to teachers or other staff were incomplete or there was no mention of the place of assignment or there were other mistakes.

Earlier, it was reported that election officers had issued arrest warrants of some teachers, despite the fact that they were not issued letters for any duty.

In the meantime, a staffer of the Sindh education secretary was picked up by police and sent to jail for a week for his alleged non-compliance of election duty order.

Show-cause notices have also been issued to some education department officials, reminding them that election duty should be taken as a national duty, while those ignoring the call should be liable to cash penalty and other action.
