HANOI, Aug 15: Eleven people, including two children, were killed when a train ploughed into a bus that was trying to cross the tracks in central Vietnam, police said Monday.

Six people were killed immediately in Sunday’s collision in Binh Dinh province south of Hanoi and five others died in hospital, a traffic police officer told AFP. Fourteen of the bus passengers were seriously injured, he said.

Vietnam has an appalling traffic safety record mainly because of widespread disregard for regulations and speed limits.

Road safety experts say fatal accidents increased more than fourfold in the past decade to almost 13,000 deaths annually. At least 36 people die on Vietnam’s roads every day.—AFP
