LONDON: What the political canal in Pakistan requires, according to Maj-Gen Sher Ali Khan, is a good thrashing because there is so much muck in it. This is stated in an interview by the minister for national affairs to “The Observer”, London.

The Minister said: “It will require more than, two or three thrashings. And this thrashing can be done only with elections. Only by giving him a period of power can you call the bluff of a leader. But the important part of machinery we still have to work out is the sluice gate, something that adjusts and controls the now so that the water flushes but never overflows the banks. The moment a Government falls or seems incapable of governing ... there must be machinery to ensure quick elections...”

In an interview with Air Marshal Asghar Khan the correspondent was of the impression that he might re-enter politics. The Air Marshal was quoted as having said: “I went into politics during unusual times for a limited purpose and that purpose has been achieved. If I stay on for the election I shall be committed to a political career to which I am not dedicated. But I have been surprised by the reactions of the people. ...” — Agency
