KARACHI: Important political leaders of both Wings of the country have expressed satisfaction over President Yahya Khan’s decision to hold general elections in the country on Oct 5 next year. They have expressed their appreciation of the manner in which the President has sought to solve the basic problems facing the nation.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Awami League chief, in a statement issued in Dacca yesterday [Nov 30] said that President Yahya Khan deserved appreciation for his “candid expression of unanimity” with the nation on the basic problems and for his sincere endeavour to know for himself the problems of the nation.

The PDP [Pakistan Democratic Party] leader Air Marshal Asghar Khan in a statement issued from Peshawar said that the President’s proposals did provide a reasonable solution of a difficult problem. He urged all those who had the welfare of the country at heart to accept the solution that had been offered.

Maulana Syed Abul Aa’la Maudoodi, the Jamaat-i-Islami chief, in a statement from Lahore, said that President Yahya Khan’s announcement of a date for the general elections was a matter of satisfaction for the entire nation.
