KARACHI: Vice-Admiral S.M. Ahsan, the Governor of East Pakistan, said in Karachi yesterday [Nov 5] that the situation in his province was fast returning to normalcy.

Talking to newsmen at the Karachi airport on arrival from Dacca, Vice-Admiral Ahsan said that the situation in East Pakistan had already improved a “great deal”. He said that the Provincial Government was taking all suitable steps to bring the situation to normal. He hoped it would “possibly be all right by today.”

Our Dacca correspondent adds: The Governor today [Nov 5] appointed a commission of inquiry with Mr Justice Salahuddin Ahmed and Mr Justice Muksumul Hakim of the Dacca High Court to determine the causes of the recent disturbances between the two sections of the people which resulted in loss of life and property.

According to a Press Note, the Commission will identify the genesis of friction between the local Bengali-speaking people of East Pakistan and the Urdu-speaking immigrants. The terms of reference also requires the Commission to recommend such appropriate measures as the Commission would consider necessary for restoring normalcy between these two sections of the people and for finding a permanent solution of the issue.
