TIMERGARA: A security guard of the University of Malakand (UoM), his son and a grandson were killed while three other members of the family suffered injuries when roof of a ramshackle wooden veranda of a quarter collapsed on the premises of the varsity at Chakdara in the early hours of Thursday.

The security guard, Shah Zarin of Shamozo, Swat, was residing in one of the quarters owned by the UoM along with his family, said police and varsity sources.

They said that the incident took place at around 3am on Thursday when all the family members were asleep in the veranda. Sources said the dilapidated quarter could not bear the load of mud on its roof and it suddenly caved in.

As a result Shah Zarin, his son Tayyab and grandson Annas were killed on the spot while his wife, another son Masood and grandson Younus were injured. The neighbours and volunteers rescued three members of the family. The dead and the injured were taken to the nearby tehsil headquarters hospital, Chakdara.

The university police registered a case and have started investigation.
