KANDAHAR, July 30: An Afghan district governor and two of his bodyguards were killed Saturday when a remote-controlled roadside bomb hit their car in south-central Afghanistan, an official said.

Abdul Jabbar and two of his guards died while three more security staff were wounded in the attack in Charchino, Uruzgan province, some 370kms southwest of Kabul, said provincial governor Jan Mohammed.

“The Charchino governor and two of his bodyguards were killed and three other guards were wounded after his vehicle was blown up by a remote-controlled bomb,” he told AFP.

A purported Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call from an undisclosed location.—AFP
