HYDERABAD: The heavy spell of monsoon rains accompanied by thunder and dust storm lashed many areas of Sindh on Wednesday.

Most parts of Hyderabad plunged into darkness as the rain started at 7pm which continued for 40 minutes at moderate speed.

Airport Latifabad Meteor­o­logical office has recorded 17mm and the city office recorded 16mm of rains.

As power supply remained discontinued, the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) commissioned generators to keep their system working for disposal of sewage and water supply.

However, the system’s efficiency was affected when regular power supply went off and stand-by generators were commissioned.

Electric wires have fallen in different areas due to dust storm and strong winds, whose speed was recorded at 50 nautical miles per hour.

The stormy weather damaged trees which according to the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco) spokesman led to disruption in power supply.

Hesco field staff is checking spots where electricity wires have snapped, the spokesperson added.

Till the filing of this report at 9pm, drizzle and at times moderate rain was continuing intermittently.

Rainwater has accumulated in low-lying areas. Some main arteries of the city remained under rainwater.

Umerkot: The district of Umerkot received heavy rainfall intermittently with strong winds.

Almost all villages and towns in arid and barrage area of the district, including Umerkot, Samaro, Pithoro, Kunri, Dhoronaro, Chhor, Meghar, Bhojrajyo and other areas were lashed with rain.

All low-lying areas were inundated with rainwater. The level of water is rising in canals.

Sanghar: Heavy rain was received in Sanghar as well on Wednesday.

The rain started in many areas of the district on Tuesday night.

Sanghar city received heavy spells of rain with strong winds, causing flood-like conditions in the city.

Rain spell continued for more than 30 minutes.

Heavy rain and strong winds also battered Shahdadpur, Khadro, Shahpur Cha­kar, Sinjhoro and its adjourning areas.

Hesco closed the power supply to Sanghar.

Badin: Heavy downpours lashed Badin turning most streets into streams and disrupting normal activities.

Rain started at 8.15pm and continued till our going to press.

No loss of life or casualty was reported. The showers provided much-needed relief to the people from sweltering heat and humid weather conditions as the cool winds brought down the temperature.

Talhar, Tando Bago Golarchi and adjoining areas received heavy showers while some other towns, including Seerani, Bhugra Memon, Kario Ganwher, Dando and Khorwah also had drizzle.

Thatta: Heavy downpours lashed Thatta district on Wednesday.

The low-lying areas of the city were submerged by rainwater. Power supply was also disrupted in some areas.

Mithi: Moderate to heavy rains again lashed areas of Mithi bringing back smiles on the faces of residents of the arid and dry region of the country.

Chhachhro, Mithi, Kaloi, Islamkot, Nagarparkar and their adjoining areas received moderate to heavy rains.

According to local residents, the fresh spells of rain would boost supply of fodder and prove fruitful for good yield of their traditional crops.

Mirpurkhas: Strong winds coupled with light rainfall uprooted many trees in different parts of the district on Wednesday while rainwater accumulated at some main roads.

The weather remained cloudy the whole day and in the evening rainfall occurred at Jhilori and 78 Mori, taluka Shujaabad. The rainwater accumulated at the main Mirpurkhas-Umerkot road near 78 Mori. Markets and bazaars in Mirpurkhas city remained closed in the evening after the rainfall.

Officials of the Municipal Committee of Mirpurkhas (MCM) failed to drain out accumulated water from low-lying areas.

Mostly playgrounds remained submerged under rainwater. As the rain started, power supply went off.

The rainwater mixed with the already dirty stagnant water in various parts of the city started emitting foul smell.

Citizens and social organisations have strongly criticised the efficiency of sanitary staff of the MCM during the rainfall.

The city was plunged into darkness till filing of this report.
