KARACHI, July 29: The final list of candidates eligible to contest local bodies polls in 11 of the 23 districts of Sindh will be made public on Saturday following expiry of deadline for withdrawal of candidature, i.e. mid-night Friday, election commission sources said.

Polling in the 11 districts is being held in the first phase on August 18.

Returning officers of the remaining 12 districts, where polling will be held in the second phase on August 25, continued to receive objections against acceptance/rejection of nomination papers on Friday whereas the papers would undergo a scrutiny on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, on Thursday and Friday political elites in the city remained busy lobbying for the candidates backed by their parties and continued their efforts to make seat adjustments, persuading independent and like-minded candidates to withdraw their nominations so that the position of their own candidates could be made stronger.

Political circles are of the view that as a result of such lobbying, it is likely that some former councillors and nazims/naib nazims will return unopposed.

Election pundits in Karachi see a direct but tough contest between candidates of Haq Parast and Al-Khidamt/Awam Dost groups in many UCs.

In the City District Karachi, where polling is scheduled for August 18, the total strength of eligible voters is 4,634,119.

The city district comprises 18 towns and 178 unions. In the phase-I, 11 districts of the province are going to polls while the electorates in the city district Karachi will elect 2,214 UC members, including nazims/naib nazims.

Against the 2,214 seats, a total of 10,894 nomination papers were filed and after scrutiny 331 of them were rejected. However, after disposal of appeals filed by candidates against rejection/acceptance of nomination papers, 10,639 nominations have been declared valid.
