PESHAWAR: A reporter of a local daily was shot dead allegedly by his relatives over a family dispute in Jehnagirpura area here late on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Tahir Hussain, who used to cover police beat for a local daily.

He was attacked near his house in Mohallah Sadhuvan in the limits of Khan Raziq police station at around 10:45pm.

A police official told Dawn that Tahir Hussain was killed on the spot while his body was later handed over to the family after postmortem.

Police collected evidence including empties from the scene.

The official said that the cause of murder appeared to be a dispute over the divorce of his second wife.

He said that the first wife of the deceased had died a couple of years ago and he had remarried. He said that he had divorced his second wife a few months ago.

The official said that brothers-in-law had attacked the house of Tahir Hussain about a year ago and an FIR against them was lodged at Khan Raziq police station.

He said that brothers of his divorced wife were named in the FIR and one of them identified as Abdul Rauf had been arrested.

A police statement said that the arrested man had confessed to the crime during initial interrogation.

The funeral prayers of the journalist were offered in Wazir Bagh on Wednesday morning.
