THIS refers to two news items (July 13). The first is the photograph report on the rice plantation using an automatic transplanting machine in Naudero at the Bhutto Estate spread over 600 acres.

The second news report is ‘Farmers stage sit-in on highway to protest water shortage’ in Badin.

The Bhuttos have abundant water and they are planting water-guzzling rice, whereas the farmers in Badin are waiting for water sitting at the tail-end of the Imam Wah Jagir canal.

Why are we planting rice in Sindh when we have a major water shortage?
