KARACHI: A murder suspect allegedly committed suicide in the lock-up of the Surjani Town police station, police said on Saturday.

The suspect, Muneer Hussain, 48, was booked and arrested for allegedly killing his wife, Rozina, in their home on July 10. He was on police remand.

The police said that the suspect ended his life on Friday night. He went inside the washroom of the lock-up, took out his shirt to make a noose around his neck and hanged himself from an iron grill.

The police found him in a critical condition but he died on the way to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Additional Police Surgeon Dr Saleem Shaikh told Dawn that a medical board would perform the autopsy in the presence of a judicial magistrate.

Police say the 48-year-old committed suicide; autopsy to be performed today

SSP-West (Investigation) Abid Ali Baloch claimed that the body bore no torture marks.

He said that the suspect was a heroin addict and he used to beat his wife frequently. The couple’s seven-year-old daughter had witnessed her father killing his wife on July 10, he said.

He said that DIG-West Dr Amin Yusufzai ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Surjani SHO Mazhar Iqbal said that the suspect had strangled his wife and a case under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code was registered against him.

Man found shot dead in Malir

The bullet-riddled body of a man was found within the remit of the Malir Cantonment police station on Saturday.

Area SHO Faisal Latif said that the man, who appeared to be in his late 40s, was found dead in the bushes off the Link Road near Hakeem Villas.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

The SHO said that the identification of the deceased was made by his fingerprints. His name was Imran Khan and he originally hailed from Mansehra.

The police were trying to trace his relatives in the city.

Suspect held in trader’s killing case

The Gulshan-i-Maymar police on Saturday claimed to have arrested a man allegedly involved in the killing of a trader recently.

“After an exchange of gunfire between suspected dacoits and the police on Gadap road, the police arrested Shakeel Ahmed in an injured condition,” said Malir SSP Irfan Bahadur.

The held suspect had gunned down Kamlesh Kumar last week in Maymar near a farmhouse.

“He has confessed to have killed the trader upon resistance,” the SSP said.

The police recovered the trader’s and his wife’s original computerised national identity cards and their ATM card from his custody.

The suspect had also killed another man, Abdul Hameed, during robbery in 2017. Two of his accomplices — Abdul Karim and Abdul Zamir — were arrested and handed down 20-year imprisonment. He had been declared absconder in the same case.

Arms ‘dumped by Lyari gangsters’ seized

Pakistan Rangers, Sindh on Saturday claimed to have seized a huge quantity of arms and ammunition of Lyari gangsters in Gulshan-i-Maymar.

A spokesperson of the paramilitary force said that on April 9, a trader, Saleem alias Mirchi, was shot dead by armed pillion riders in Kharadar. A special team of the Rangers had arrested Khurram Mumtaz, Iqbal alias German and his son, Naveed Iqbal.

During investigations, Iqbal had disclosed about arms and ammunition dumped by “active members” of Lyari gangs.

A raid was conducted in Gulshan-i-Maymar on Saturday and the Rangers recovered arms, ammunition, grenades, communication equipment, etc.
