PESHAWAR: The All Pakistan Lawyers Convention will be held on Saturday (today) on the premises of Peshawar High Court in support of two judges of the superior judiciary against whom the government has filed references before the Supreme Judicial Council.

Peshawar High Court Bar Association President Abdul Lateef Afridi, while addressing a news conference at the press club on Friday, said without an independent judiciary the country could not prosper, but the government had been trying to ‘install’ a controlled judiciary in the country.

He said the convention was meant to show solidarity with Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court and Justice KK Agha of Sindh High Court and to protest against the references filed against them by the government.

He was flanked by members of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council and office-bearers of PHCBA and Peshawar District Bar association, including its president Syed Taimur Ali Shah.

Lateef Afridi said the event would be attended by lawyers’ representatives from Quetta, Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and other parts of the country. He added the convention would also discuss Article 175-A of the Constitution related to appointment of judges to the superior judiciary and other problems of the legal fraternity.
