Pakistan need World Cup miracle, admits Sarfaraz

Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed admitted his team need a miracle to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals as they prepare for their final league game against Bangladesh at Lord's on Friday.
Pakistan require an outlandishly big victory but if Bangladesh bat first, their chances of catching New Zealand will be gone.
“Obviously, we are here to win all the matches,” said Sarfaraz, whose team have lost their past four one-day internationals against a fast-improving Bangladesh.

“We will do our best to win the last game as well to end on a high and we will do our best to achieve that but we need to be realistic, but if Allah helps then miracles can happen,” he said.
“It's like you score 600, 500, 400 on a pitch then you think you can get the other team out for 50 and then win by a 316-run margin. If you think realistically, then we can only try.
“But the first real thing will be to win the match.”
Pakistan's highest total at the tournament is the 348-8 they made in their shock win over England. The host nation's 397-6 against Afghanistan is the best of the World Cup so far.
Sarfaraz said it had been tough to post big totals on the pitches being used in the tournament. “If you look at the tournament then, realistically, the tournament is of 280-300 totals,” said Sarfaraz.
“If you look at the pitches, they were not for free-scoring. They were tough for batting with spin and the ball was not coming onto the bat.”
Pakistan were shot out for a paltry 105 in their first match, with the West Indies winning in just 13.4 overs, meaning they took a huge hit on run rate.
They won just one of their first five matches, coming back strongly to beat South Africa, New Zealand and Afghanistan to sit fifth in the 10-team table. But England's victory against New Zealand on Wednesday left them with a virtually impossible task.
Those two teams plus Australia and India will almost certainly be the four semi-finalists.

Next cross the minimum threshold of 308 runs. Anything below and no chance to qualify. All the runs you manage over 308, will be the target runs to bowl out Bangladesh.

Don't talk about miracles. Its all right. While Pakistan could have done itself a huge favor by chasing smaller totals quickly, in the end it came down to rain that played the spoiler. NZ does not belong to the semis having lost to all teams that mattered (Eng, Aus, Pak) and shared a point with India due to a washout (which they would have lost too). Pak played well in the second half of the tournament so no complaints there as long as you give your best. Best of luck champ

It is very sad to see a team progressing to Semi final when they lost to big teams. New Zealand lost to Australia, England and Pakistan, and a washout against India. I think ICC should consider some other metrics going forward to have a team that win matches against big teams to be in the semis.
The way India played on Sunday against England speaks volume. Their own people know that they didn't played to their full potential and their body language was extremely bad.

Win your last match with big margin (even if its not enough to qualify you) and it will be a graceful exit from the world cup. Fans will still forgive you since you beat England and NZ who were unbeaten in the WC. You were in perfect position to win Australia game but poor fielding costed you the game. In summary, there are other better teams who deserved to proceed to next level.

No, we don't need any miracles. Looking at the decision making abilities of the captain and the coaching staff, the selection process prior to team's departure to England, and then followed by individual performances of the players, we do not deserve to be in the semifinals. You did not even deserve to win against Afghanistan if it was not up to the opposition captain and a few miracles down the order. Just look at opening pairs of the top 3 finalists and then look at ours, it tell all.

Truth is Pakistan has beaten both New Zealand and England, both semi finalist. Also Pakistan's bad luck that one of their games was abandoned due to rain resulting in loss of one potential point.

Pakistan already has won 4 matches (thats why they have 9 points) and will probably end with 5 wins if they beat BD in last game and end up with 11 points which would be the same as NZ team making the semis due to higher NRR.
1992 was not a mere fluke. In 1992, they beat NZ twice (which was the only unbeaten team) and also beat a very strong England team in the final.
I would not call winning any World Cup a mere fluke!

This outcome is not justified. Decision on which of the two teams should enter the semi final should not really be based on net run rate, as it is a significant decision and some matches have been shortened and indeed wiped off due to weather conditions. It should be based on which of the two teams emerged victorious in their pool match and there Pakistan should enter the semi final on merit as they had beaten New Zealand. Both semi finalists NZ and England lost to Pakistan in the pool matches.

Miracles are not gifted. They need to be earned. Going by the past history of this team there is no way they can win with a margin that is needed to qualify. Had they played responsibly in the initial stage of tournament, result could have been different. A huge loss against WI came back to haunt them. YOU DONT Rely on other teams loss or win to make you through the next stage except on your guts. Simply wrong strategy to begin with. Hope they learn this a hard way and make amends in future!

Maybe you have issues supporting cricketers not of your ethnicity, but fortunately, the overwhelming majority of Pakistanis aren't so parochial (I loved the dancing in Quetta at our last victory!).
Incidentally, the captain is a Muhajir, players like Shaheen Afridi and Fakhar Zaman are Pashtun.....hardly "only Punjabi team (sic)".

Just come home and work hard on your fitness most of you are over weight and not physically fit to play ODI or Test cricket. PCB kindly consider players from U-10 team who are playing so well in SA and have won all the matches there. Pick players from there and provide them good coaching staff I bet we will have much better team in coming years.

You lost big time by no. 9 team, you dropped multiple catches, your fielding was at low par, leaking so many runs. All the matches , you won were in last over, top batsmen scoring run rate was low and your captaincy was worst of all.
Pakistan team has long list of lessons learnt. Action plan is required to correct all above to play modern and consistent cricket.

Less so at the Indian trolls: that behavior is expected of these people now. Of course the tournament started off horribly and if their form before was anything to go by, they will need to make massive improvements. But I'll applaud them for the (almost) comeback. They've fought back like lions and nearly took out two of the top 4.

I'm sorry that Pakistan appears to be out of the final four. However, the team's inconsistent play makes one accept that the result is not unfair. As a Pakistani, I was shocked by our display against the West Indies and also against Afghanistan. On the present showing, Pakistan simply cannot claim to be among the top four teams in the tournament.

Sarfaraz, your objective is again wrong. How impossible it would be, but your target should be to go for the semi final ( provided you bat first). Even if you lose the match going for that target no worries. You should not enter into the ground just to win the match but to go into semi finals. You should start the match like T20. If Pakistan team get out early and lose the match in the process no worries. Points have no importance now. Pakistanis want to see your last effort for semifinal spot.

Sarfaraz your approach is again wrong. Once winning the toss or asked to bat first, your target should be semi final spot. No matter how impossible it is. "If there is a will there is a way". Just winning or team position on points table has no importance for Pakistanis now. Start like T20 even if Pakistan get out early in the process it does not matter. If you were able to get a good score, try to get them out early. I know they are very good side but luck also favors the brave.

Pakistan's entry to semis depended on the outcome of that match. If WI had won, they would have gone to semis with 10 points. The rest is history!

@NT, Pakistan beat England, NewZealand and South Africa, and based on last few games should beat Bangladesh as well. This is anything but disappointing, even compared to the four semifinalists, two of which Pakistan beat, let along Bangladesh who are lower in the ranking.
Inshallah Pakistan will give Bangladesh a solid thrashing and end their World Cup campaign on a high.

Pakistan team needs to do some soul-searching on 3 fronts - Strategy when things go wrong (or Plan B), major improvement in Fielding (through focused practice) and improve consistency. The last can be done through proper coaching and mentoring. Good luck!!

So even the rest of team, which is 70%, from Punjab... nothing surprise about it.

PAK critics are a bit harsher. They beat ENG, no.1 ranked, host & title-contender. They won against NZ which had not lost any match before that. They defeated AFG though with ups & downs but AFG had also shaken IND and others. They shown Exit door to SA ranks above PAK. Game against SL was literally a win but washed out. Pakistan is already out of Semi Final so Pakistan should focus on wining against Bangladesh. Win will give Pakistan guaranteed 5th position. It will be much better than their current ranking 6th. Loss against West Indies very badly damaged our net run rate while not able to win winnable match against Australia is the reason costed our team Semi Final. So there fore it is better Pakistan should play their natural game and focus to win against Bangladesh.

As an Indian fan, I do think the rules are not correct when teams finish on equal points. It should be the result of the match between the two teams, then, most number of wins, then run rate. This is cricket, not football where they use goal difference as the main deciding rule.

The biggest lesson for them is to approach every game (no matter what the opposition) with the same level of discipline & professionalism and to show greater consistency with the bat

After thrashing from WI in opening game they should be good on counting NRR which was likely to come in picture...why you won game against NZ and AFG in last overs you could have planned to win against AFG in 35 overs and against NZ in 40 overs considering 6 wik win against NZ... They were either too occupied critizing the team or they were certain England would lose one of their last 2 games.
