There must be some legitimate reason for one of the passengers to open the exit door and that may be one of the reasons that airconditioning of PIA aircraft may not be working and there would not have been cross ventilation which has created suffocation inside the aircraft. It was one person who opened the exit door but a group of 40 people were off-loaded along with their luggage. Frequent travellers know the consequences of opening the exit door once it is locked by Cabin Crew Staff before take off. However, a detailed inquiry into this incident by the PIA authorities and staff deputed for ground handling and statement of the passenger alongwith statements of other 39 passengers who all were off-loaded will reveal the real truth behind opening of the exit door of PIA aircraft PK-702 at Manchester Airport.

This reminds me of a Pakistani passenger, who was seated next to me on a flight to London, decades ago. Apparently, it was her first time flying, anywhere. Before the plane even took off, she asked the stewards, "Behan, zarra khirkee tu khol de."

Operating cabin crew of that particular galley is responsible for the mishap, as they’re supposed to key in the lock to prevent accidental opening if someone presses the lever. Time to conduct safety refresher courses for cabin crew!

I remember as a child traveling from NY to Karachi and one passenger complaining on the state of bathrooms only after 5 hours into the flight. Passenger said, "no other airline has these issues". The flight steward replied, "no other airline flies 300 Pakistanis".

Must be one of the standing passengers who opened the door. Otherwise one is belted on their seat during take off by law internationally and airlines across most parts of the world follow it. But in Pakistan I heard these rules and norms are not followed and travelling by air is like a bus with standing passengers too..

I will actually side with the passenger. There are many first time flyers and they can make such mistakes. But offloading and ridiculing them should not be allowed. Also shame on the Pakistani media for making an issue out of nothing. Concentrate on some positive issues rather than on sensationalism.

Where were the cabin crew members? Why did not they stop the passenger from opening the emergency exist? Why did not they help the passenger to the toilet door?

Even if it was the exit door, why would a passenger try to open it? Also who will pay for the damages including the lodging costs for the affected passengers

Everybody has seen the door, it looks heavy. It can’t be opened easily as the door of the washroom. If it can be opened easily, then there should be some mechanism to lock it. I believe authorities must be investigating from this point of view.

Well it is the PIA. The staff are non existant, the passengers can do whatever the please, including taking seats NOT assigned to them and the staff will nothing about it. After take off you will. Only see the staff when meals are to be served. So this is surprise. Pompous Incompetent Airlines.

Whats wrong with people. Even a child knows what an emergency door is - which is not easy to open in the first place.

It must be night time and all lights turned off otherwise the said passenger must have gone to the correct door or the passengers or the attendants must have noticed the mistake . PIA must look into the problem objectively and take some long lasting decisions to avoid such incidents and also for the safety of ladies travelling alone.

Interesting. As the plane was ready to depart, how was the passenger allowed to leave her seat. Where was the crew when this happened as they should be in the galley or on jump seats next to all the doors? 40 passengers on a B777 plane with over 350 seats, no wonder PIA is incurring losses.

The passenger should either pay for damages and charges incurred due to his stupidity or he should be sent to jail to work there in low wage till he earns the money in jail.

Definitely a ban for the passenger to ruin the travel plans of other passengers with massive inconvenience, BUT, also, don't you all think the Safety guidelines and instructions should also be worked upon? Why would he open the Emergence door (even if he was flying for the first time). The only good thing is, we know that Emergency door 'can' be opened easily, in case of real Emergency, and it works.

Story is incomplete even basic information is missing, like what type of aircraft, was that all passengers in the flight or partially evacuated. If it was all of the passengers, than the bigger story is why PIA is fly a 777 on a route that has such low numbers. Or why a mentally challenged person is allowed near the emergency exit seat.

How on earth did a passanger manage to get out of his seat and hit the emergency exit button while the plane was taxing on the runway and getting ready for take off. At this point all passangers are required, under the supervision of air crew, to have had their seat belts firmly fastened. PIA needs to elaborate the story and in some detail too. Have also noticed that the PIA's spokesperson has very poor command over the English Language, if that spokesperson is paid the proper wage, it is a prerequisite that such a spokesperson should have command over the language he/she is communicating in.

Only 40 passengers on a long haul big aircraft? Little wonder that PIA is making a heavy loss and is burdened with debt. Quite frankly, it would be best to suspend the route to avoid heavy losses.

In the design of the motion control mechanism of the hatch door of ARJ21-700, an important goal is to make the objective point of the hatch door move precisely along the prescribed trajectory. Normally the designers pay more attentions to implementation of the mechanism configuration, & also consider the effects of perturbations of the parameters, e.g. slight change of the size of the parts of the mechanism, the tolerances of the parts or assembly. Due to the existence of machining errors & assembly clearances, the real running trajectory of the mechanism inevitably has some deviations from the prescribed trajectory. If such deviations can’t be controlled under the proper level, affecting the normal functionality of the hatch door system & even lead to some serious problems, seal trouble & the motion opening problem. This incidence as such refers to a hatch door maintenance issue, needing a thorough investigation to avert future incidents.

@Sid, It is a standard protocol all over the world to evacuate every passenger and offload the plane whenever an emergency door is opened, weather in response to some tragedy or by accident that does not matter.

Lets put things into context: If a passenger defies basic instructions from the crew when the seat belt signs are on, there is only so much they can do. However, it is quite surprising that the passenger had the time to get to the door and open it without any intervention. That's the first question to ask. If is also surprising that a passenger who could not tell the difference between a lavatory and an exit, had the skill and capability needed to open the door. It's not that easy. That is the second question to ask. PIA was not only flying three dozen passengers, they off loaded three dozen passengers. it was a full flight. Once the chute has been activated, it needs to be replaced or the exit is considered unserviceable. And in order to operate an aircraft with an unserviceable door, the passenger load must be reduced proportionately for safety reasons. The offload was the only option PIA had to allow the flight to operate.

How a person who is not able to distinguish between Emergency/Toilet door can open the emergency door which is not easy for anyone. Also where were the Air Hostesses and other members during that time and surprisingly left unnoticed! It is a matter of great concern and instead of passenger the crew members are to be punished who have dealt with the passenger with casual approach.

It happened on runway, when the flight was about to take off. 1) Why was he not in his seat bucked up. Is it possible to open this door, when the flight is in mid air (That would be a disaster) and if it is possible.

@ExMohajirinUK, not at all. 40 off loaded as due to deployment of chute capacity to evacuate aircraft in any emergency is reduced so capacity has to be reduced commensurately. PIA chose to replace the chute back at base in Pakistan and not in Manchester which would have cost more in time and money. Also aircraft was still on ramp. Not possible to open door once doors are armed and engines running Ill informed comment is not helpful

Im sure just the headline made many smile or even laugh. I am wondering how strong that lady was to pull off the emergency exit. Also, pulling it off in the first attempt also requires some brains. I assume first attempt since any repeat attempts would have prompted fellow passengers to react. I have been smiling just imganing the episode while it is a serious matter indeed.
