WITH reference to your editorial ‘Mothers in parliament’ (May 20), I would like to say that it is universal issue being faced by working mothers in Pakistan. Look at airports, an international spot where many female workers are working who have children, but there is no facility of day-care centre. As airports have a 24-hour operation, women must work on a shift basis. Just imagine, how difficult would it be for a mother to leave her kids for 12 hours?

Not just airports but in all other government-managed departments there is no facility of day-care centres. Departments have the budget for an officers’ mess and other luxuries but not for female facilitation. If we really want to make Pakistan a progressive state, then women must be encouraged and helped.

Female members of the legislature are requested to do something productive for women. It should be made mandatory for all public and private offices to set up day-care centres for working mothers.
