Lockheed Martin offers to make F-21 India-specific

WASHINGTON: US aerospace giant Lockheed Martin has offered to sign an exclusive deal to India for newly rolled out F-21 fighter jet, telling New Delhi that it will not sell this aircraft to any other country if India agrees to buy it.
Last month, the Indian Air Force (IAF) issued initial tender to acquire 114 jets at a cost of around $18 billion, which is one of the world’s biggest military procurement in recent years.
Lockheed’s F-21, Boeing’s F/A-18, Dassault Aviation’s Rafale, the Eurofighter Typhoon, Russian aircraft Mig 35 and Saab’s Gripen are the top contenders for the deal.
“Lockheed Martin is committed to strategic, long-term international defence partnerships with India,” said a statement the company released on Tuesday. “Our proposed partnerships with India … are ideally suited to not just meet, but exceed India’s capability and defence-industrial needs.”
Noting India has a pressing need for advanced, scalable defence capabilities, Lockheed Martin proposed a “game-changing” defence partnership.
Vivek Lall, vice president of Strategy and Business Development for Lockheed Martin, told India’s PTI news agency “we will not sell this platform and the configuration to anyone in the world” if India concludes a deal with the country.
He said that India will be integrated into the company’s global fighter ecosystem, which is a $165 billion dollar market that benefit multiple stakeholders in India, the US and beyond.
In a separate statement, the company said that Lockheed Martin and Tata would jointly produce the F-21 in India, for India. The aircraft will specifically configured for the Indian Air Force, the F-21 and will provide unmatched ‘Make in India’ opportunities, the company added.
Lockheed Martin is also trying to sell helicopters and other platform to the Indian Air Force.
Indian official sources told PTI that the IAF “is pushing for finalising the mega deal in the wake of the Balakot strikes and evolving security scenario in the region.”
The F-21 has a Long-Range Infrared Search and Track (IRST), enabling pilots to detect threats with precision and Triple Missile Launcher Adapters (TMLAs) allowing it to carry 40 per cent more air-to-air weapons.
In September, Lockheed Martin finalised a joint venture with the Tata Advanced Systems to produce F-16 wings in India for export.

Sad to see govts finding money for defence of such high value but they cannot get rid of poverty, hunger, provide education, healthcare etc. It’s fine to spend money on defence but at the same time govts need to spend to provide basic needs. They need to get their priorities right.

US uses pressure tactics to accept upgraded f16 ie f21. But now iaf knows how vulnerable f16 is. Apart from this, there is always fear of blackmailing with critical spares which they won't allow to manufacture under make in India initiatives.

For routine patrols, Tejas is good and India should focus more on its upgraded versions. War like scenarios don't happen too often and even 40 odd latest and state of the art planes are enough to meet that "once in a blue moon" scenario. India has made wise decisions to go for nuclear shields and missile defense systems & is focusing on Satellite intelligence as well. Modernization of Navy rather is the utmost need of the hour!.. as we need to break the "string of pearls".

What is a big deal in it ???? Its a simple trade. When a manufacturer smells upcoming demand, he will certainly engages his sales dept to pursue with customer.
In this case Lockheed Martin has a product called F21 and senses India has a requirement and publishes global tender. So this actually a trade deal for every one except India.

I doubt India has capable pilots so will be wastage of billions of dollars to make their master happy when st the other hand bullion living below the poverty line in your country. With this poor safety records India should refrain from buying sophisticated defence equipment worth billions of dollars and instead invest money to improve the lives of millions of homeless people and malnourished children.

F-21 is modified version of F-16. Although it is war proven but a very old design. Only suitable jet for IAF requirement seems to be SAAB Gripen unless Russia comes up with a single engine version of MIG-29.

The thing is that India will squander this once in a lifetime opportunity because they spread a lie that a Mig-21 shot down Pakistani F-16 and believed it. This is a great opportunity for India. The F-21 is an incredible plane and it is even better than Rafale, but India is not a logical country. If Pakistan had this plane then it will own India (with Rafales). America knows this and it will not sell it to Pakistan.

Indians should leave this Air Force thing to Pakistan. They were never good at it. Their worthless claim of shooting down an F-16 will never be verified.
Regardless, no country should ever trust the US because the US will change its colors in a few years.

Feel bad for poor masses in subcontinent. They will remain poor and without basic human rights. civic amenities and adequate quality education. Indo Pak will continue to be the slaves of higher technology western powers and spend billions out of their limited budget to buy these expensive armory. Imagine if most of the military budget is spend on human development of these masses, how much it will elevate the poverty and brings justice to majority of sub continent poor people who has been suffering for centuries now.
