KARACHI, Oct 14: The government has been urged to take adequate security measures to protect municipal properties from any possible damage by “rioters”.

In a message to the governor of Sindh and other authorities, the Lyari Town Nazim took note of the Oct 12 incident when “strikers” broke the locks of the entry gate of the Town office building in Chawkiwara.

Giving details of the incident, he said that it was a very sad situation which became worse when the police deployed in the vicinity of the office premises did not reach the troubled site to control the mob.

Anticipating the intent of the protesters, the building’s security should have been the top-most priority, but the police and rangers authorities failed to preserve the sanctity of this public property, he added.

Rioters were allowed to march unchecked on the roads with sticks, stones and other weapons, forcibly entered the parking area and pulled out two motorcycles and two cars (one of which was allotted to the Town Municipal Officer) and set them on fire.

In view of another strike on Monday given by some Ulema council, he apprehended more damage to properties and even loss of human life if timely measures were not taken.
