PESHAWAR, July 13: Warsak Club survived some anxious moments before coming through 5-4 winners to move into the next round of District Inter-club hockey championship at Lala Ayub Stadium on Wednesday.

Warsak defeated Prince Civil Quarters in a thrilling match watched by capacity crowd, while Pakha Ghulam, a club from suburban area of provincial capital, held Stars Club to 1-1 in another encounter.

Warsak were two goals down at one stage, came back strongly to snatch victory with major help from right-in Javed Khan who had an exceptional game.

Prince Civil Quarters took an early lead through centre-forward Sohail off a beautiful long-hit pass from fullback Ijaz Khan. He rifled the ball to unmarked Sohail who dispatched it right into the net.

Zafar Mehmood firmed up the lead converting a penalty corner in the 17th minute but it proved short-lived as Warsak’s inside-right Javed Khan levelled it with a two-goal burst in quick succession.

Javed scored in the 30th and 33rd minute on a field attempts before the first half. The teams remained locked at 2-2 till halftime.

The second-half was dominated by Warsak as Laiqat Khan (43rd), Zubair (48th) and Tajaml Hayat (50th) scored one goal after another to push the lead to 5-2.

But the margin failed to dampen Prince Civil Quarters’ spirits, with inside-left Nasir slamming a goal in the 66th minute and centre-forward Amjad following it up with another in the dying moments to make it 5-4.

In the other match Pakha Ghulam and Stars Club were tied at 1-1. Pakha Ghulam were put ahead by Shahbaz Khan off a field attempt, but Murad levelled the score in the 56th minute.—APP
