CM takes notice of female patient's alleged rape, murder at Karachi hospital

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Monday took notice of the alleged rape and murder of a female patient at a hospital in Karachi, and demanded a detailed report of the incident, his spokesperson said.

Last week, the Awami Colony police had arrested a paramedical staff member of a hospital over allegations of causing the unintentional death of a 24-year-old woman by administering the “wrong solution" to her.

According to the victim's family, she was taken to a renowned hospital in Karachi's Korangi area for treatment of a gum infection but she ended up losing her life at the facility.

A first information report (FIR) was lodged on the deceased's brother's complaint against the paramedic named Shahzeb and Dr Ayaz Abbasi, the latter of whom has obtained a pre-arrest bail from a local court.

The woman's family further alleged that the victim was raped before being injected with the solution, although the relevant Section for the alleged crime was not added to the FIR.

Deputy Inspector General East Amir Farooqi told Dawn that the police are investigating the allegation and the charge will be added to the report once the probe is concluded. DNA samples collected from the victim's body as well as the suspects have been sent for examination.

The officer said a preliminary medical report has revealed "sexual activity" but that they were waiting for final report from the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

The chief minister, in his statement today, termed the incident "unacceptable" and inquired about the progress of the investigation.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sindh Kaleem Imam, also ordered Korangi's senior superintendent of police as well as SSP Investigation to submit reports regarding the investigation of the incident.

Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah also took notice of the incident and demanded a report from the provincial health minister. He urged the IGP Sindh to ensure the arrest of the culprits.

This was the second case of fatality caused due to alleged negligence of medical staff this week. Earlier today, nine-month-old Nashwa, who had been paralysed after being injected with a wrong solution at the Darul Sehat Hospital in Karachi, also passed away.

Completely mind boggling. A professional facility meant to provide relief against illness & disease being used by sexual predators to satisfy their lust on vulnerable sick woman. This event shows degeneration of few in our medical facilities of the country - a cause of serious concern for already stressed health sector where majority of people are having inaccessibility due to unaffordsbilty of high cost of medical coverage in such facilities. One can hope, that all such facilities where female patients remain unattended by their family member due to regulatory requirements, must have round the clock CCTV monitoring & oversight of senior management of the hospital, to root out out this menace. Additionally, it should be ascertained by the hospital management that in all cases, prior to hiring young paramedical staff, a thorough mandatory background checkup including certification of their mental health with regard to sexual behavior of the incompetent is also carried out w/o failure.

Unacceptable? Sure but this is happening daily. You have no idea what happens to (often unconscious or immobile) female patients in hospitals, asylums, prisons etc. Our nation has been deemed among the top 5 most dangerous countries for women. Can we change this? There must be reprecussions. Severe punishment is the only deterrant. But our corrupt system ensures FIR are not filed or tests and investigations are tempered with or changed to favour the guilty ones. So what justice can we expect? Not every story makes the news..

Reform in Pakistan hospital private and state owned is a must . The criminals who are responsbile should be punished by the law! Plus, Pakistan needs to develop clinics as out reach programs ,do the public have easy access to primary care,where their health problems are diagnosed earlier! Thus, less burden on these over crowed hospitals ! Reforms are a must!

CM should end the hold of MQM from Karachi hospitals, we all know how their THUGS operate in form of UNIONS in almost all hospitals tabba heart institute or liaquat national etc etc even now they got more power after PTI backing, as we already have example how much damage they does to PTCL and other institutes but its matter of life and death at least not allowed such entitles exist in health care department and must have performance check of all employees with detail record and background whom working there and fired any suspicious person immediately.

What a nightmare, crimes happen and A asks B for a report, C asks D and so on. But nothing happens and will never happen. Someone needs to take action- the victim’s closest one who has nothing left to lose will take action one day. Then we will hear cries of law being taken into own hands- which law???

Hospital turned as brothel > new discovery at least for me if not others since it happened in my own beloved Pakistan but certainly it does not happen so in Kuwait where I am living since 1978. The accused will engage lawyer and perhaps after few court appearances the case will be quashed for lack of evidence as we notices in Air Marshal Asghar Khan case where after many years gap in between FIA says no evidence available. I am very sad to see the state of mind we are diving in as a society. I have seen sone criticising PPP here and without any logic connotate corruption with this societal issue. We should introspect ourselves if a boy in family is preferred over gorls do I hold ground to say anything to other? When a woman can't go out alone in night have I ever asked my son why his presence out there has made women insecure? Work on yourself please... don't be the champion of good on social media but be good in real. Butcher like these should be abandoned by tgeir family first.
